The "Enhanced Visual Search" toggle, located within the Photos settings, permits Apple to "privately match places in your photos with a global index." This function enhances the existing "Visual Look Up" capability, which identifies objects in photos, by adding landmark recognition. Users can access this by swiping up on a photo and selecting "Look up Landmark".

Furthermore, Apple's machine-learning research explains the process in detail. An on-device model initially analyzes images for potential landmarks, then generates an encrypted vector embedding that is transmitted to Apple for database comparison. Vector embeddings transform data into numerical representations, enabling the machine learning process.

Despite Apple's efforts to maintain user privacy through encryption and data reduction techniques, the default opt-in nature of this feature has been questioned. Many privacy advocates argue that such a setting should be opt-in, similar to analytics sharing or Siri interaction recordings, to give users more control. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
