Vienna, Austria – Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced his resignation Sunday, following the collapse of coalition talks with the Social Democrats. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) subsequently nominated General Secretary Christian Stocker as interim leader.

Nehammer's resignation comes after coalition negotiations with the Social Democrats (SPÖ) failed. He plans to step down in the coming days. Stocker, a seasoned lawyer and parliamentarian, is now set to temporarily helm the Austrian government.

Stocker, general secretary since 2022, is seen as a capable communicator, having frequently addressed the media to defend controversial policies. His appointment reflects the ÖVP's desire for stability during this period of transition.

In a brief statement, Nehammer emphasized the need to maintain a stable and central governing approach. He was escorted by security personnel to meet with President Van der Bellen.

Nehammer, 52, assumed the chancellorship in 2021 following the resignation of Sebastian Kurz, who faced corruption allegations. His tenure saw him become the first European leader to visit Moscow since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. He had also met with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy beforehand.

President Van der Bellen will announce the next steps in the government following his meeting with Nehammer.
