A Canadian man has tragically died in an avalanche while snowboarding in the mountains near Salt Lake City, Utah. The 38-year-old, identified as David Éthier, was found following a multi-day search and rescue operation.
Authorities from the Salt Lake County sheriff's office confirmed that Éthier's body was recovered on Tuesday. According to Deputy Arlan Bennett, Éthier had been splitboarding in the Millcreek Canyon area on Saturday when he was caught in the avalanche.
The search for Éthier began Sunday evening after his dog was found by a family in the area. Subsequently, his car was located at a nearby trailhead. These discoveries led authorities to contact his family in Quebec, who reported he was overdue by 24 hours.
Rescue efforts were hindered by heavy snowfall, which persisted until Tuesday. Despite the difficult conditions, search teams were able to capitalize on a small window of opportunity for helicopter deployment.
Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera expressed her condolences, describing the incident as a "heartbreaking tragedy." The Sheriff’s office conveyed its deepest sympathies to the family during their time of grief.
