Unusually powerful waves have been impacting Peru's northern and central coasts, leading to significant disruptions. The large swells have prompted the closure of numerous ports and beaches as a precautionary measure, with the situation expected to persist for another week, according to the Peruvian Navy.
Video footage from Friday shows the dramatic impact of the waves. Sailboats were tossed about, jet skis were submerged, and the coastline was repeatedly battered as onlookers moved to safety. The powerful surge has caused debris and flooding in coastal areas.
The intense sea activity has particularly affected coastal fishing communities. Despite the widespread disruption and damage to infrastructure and vessels, there have been no reports of fatalities resulting from the high waves.
In response to the dangerous conditions, authorities have closed approximately 80 ports and a number of beaches to ensure public safety. The ongoing high swells continue to pose a risk, and residents are advised to take necessary precautions. The situation is being closely monitored.
