A former national security advisor to Donald Trump, Robert O'Brien, has acknowledged the reality of climate change, a stance notably different from his former boss. O'Brien used this acknowledgment to suggest the strategic importance of Greenland amidst warming global temperatures, implying a potential U.S. takeover. This justification comes as Trump has previously threatened to acquire Greenland, along with other actions towards neighboring countries.

O'Brien, speaking on Fox News, proposed that the U.S. could reduce its reliance on the Panama Canal as climate change makes Arctic waterways more navigable. He described Greenland as a "highway" to North America and emphasized its strategic importance in the Arctic. He further noted that Russia and China are actively expanding their presence in the region. This development comes as Trump's administration has been making threats towards the region, which he claimed was for the sake of "security" and "freedom".

O'Brien also stated that Denmark, which currently controls Greenland, must defend the territory against Russian and Chinese encroachment. He suggested that if Denmark cannot do so, the U.S. would step in, potentially acquiring Greenland in the process. This stance echoes Trump's previous statements about acquiring Greenland, a territory he views as critical despite his rhetoric regarding ending foreign conflicts.

Trump's recent suggestions have been met with strong rebukes from leaders of the nations involved. The president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, firmly stated that the Panama Canal "belongs to Panama and will remain so". Similarly, Greenland's Prime Minister, Múte Egede, declared that Greenland is not for sale, reaffirming its sovereignty. These responses highlight a growing opposition to Trump's proposed actions.
