A man was discovered with significant burn injuries inside Penn Station in Manhattan on Friday evening, prompting an investigation by authorities. The incident occurred amidst heightened concerns regarding public safety following a recent fatal subway arson.
Around 8:20 PM, emergency services responded to reports of an injured man within the bustling train station. The individual, who remains unidentified, sustained burns to his legs and upper body. He was subsequently transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center and is currently listed in stable condition, as of late Friday.
While the extent of the injuries is serious, they are not considered life-threatening according to fire department sources. The immediate cause of the burns and whether any criminal activity is suspected remain unclear, prompting a thorough joint investigation between the MTA Police and the NYPD.
The area near tracks 11 and 12 of Penn Station was cordoned off by law enforcement as they began their probe. The incident occurred just days after a fatal subway arson incident, where a woman was tragically killed.
In connection with the subway incident, a suspect, 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta, has been charged with murder and arson. The charges were filed just hours before the Penn Station incident and are unrelated. Authorities have emphasized that there is no ongoing risk to the public related to the recent incident at Penn Station.
