Meta announced Wednesday that some Facebook users in Germany, France, and the US will be able to view and complete eBay transactions directly within Facebook Marketplace. This test, starting Wednesday, allows browsing and completing eBay purchases within the Facebook platform.
This integration aims to benefit users of both platforms. eBay sellers gain exposure to Facebook's large user base, while Marketplace users gain access to a wider selection of eBay listings.
The move follows a significant €840 million fine imposed by the European Commission on Meta for anti-competitive practices related to Facebook Marketplace. The EU alleges Meta unfairly integrated Marketplace into its platform, giving it an undue advantage over competitors.
Meta maintains its disagreement with the Commission's decision, citing a lack of evidence of harm to consumers or competitors. They intend to appeal the fine while simultaneously implementing the Marketplace integration as a potential solution to concerns raised by the EU.
eBay stock saw a surge of 8% Wednesday, reaching its highest point since November 2021, potentially reflecting optimism regarding this integration and eBay's position in the e-commerce market. eBay has been facing increasing competition from other major players in the sector.
Both eBay and the European Commission have been contacted for further comment.
