A body has been discovered in the search for missing Belfast father John George Hardy, prompting the arrest of a 32-year-old suspect on suspicion of murder. Hardy, 37, vanished in Spain in December, failing to return to his children in Northern Ireland.
Local police confirmed the discovery of the body near Valencia on January 7th. Initial reports suggest the body may be that of Hardy, but a formal identification and cause of death are pending forensic results. Concurrently, Spanish authorities arrested a 32-year-old man.
Hardy's family, including his father Billy and younger brother Darren, had been actively involved in the search efforts, alongside numerous volunteers. Darren Hardy previously expressed his fear that his brother was deceased.
The Guarda Civil police spokesperson stated that while the investigation is ongoing, all procedures are being followed to determine the cause of death and identify the body.
Hardy's brother conveyed the depth of the family's grief, describing the ordeal as a "living nightmare." His sister expressed her profound loss on social media.
Hardy's father, Billy, confirmed placing flowers at the location where the body was found. He shared the immense sorrow of the situation.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) was informed of the discovery on Tuesday and is working closely with Spanish authorities. The PSNI is appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 101.
