Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, has leveled a serious accusation against former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, claiming he committed a grave crime against the British public related to the grooming gangs scandal. Musk's accusations, posted on social media, allege a 2008 circular to police instructing them to disregard victims' claims.
Brown vehemently denies the allegations, calling them a "complete fabrication" and accusing Musk of spreading "outright lies." His spokesman issued a statement firmly rejecting any involvement in issuing such a circular.
The dispute follows a larger war of words between Musk and Labour leader Keir Starmer over the scandal. Musk, in recent days, has intensified his attacks, seizing on claims circulating online to fuel the controversy. Starmer has finally publicly rebuked Musk and other individuals spreading misinformation, stating that their actions "crossed a line."
This latest volley of accusations, targeting Brown, has prompted a firm response. The former Prime Minister's office has countered that the alleged circular is completely baseless. An independent inquiry concluded in 2022, led by Professor Alexis Jay, found child abuse was prevalent in society, with 20 recommendations for improvement. Labour has committed to implementing these recommendations, while the government has stated it's working towards the reforms set out in that report.
The timing of Musk's accusations, which critics suggest are designed to further racial division, has drawn significant scrutiny. Critics also note that a pre-existing independent inquiry effectively addresses the issue, and additional investigations are likely unnecessary.
