Reports indicate North Korean forces supporting Russia in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine are experiencing significant casualties, with the U.S. revealing substantial losses in recent weeks. Simultaneously, the U.S. is poised to announce a major military aid package for Ukraine.

White House spokesperson John Kirby disclosed on Friday that "thousands" of North Korean soldiers have been either killed or wounded recently. Kirby emphasized that Russian and North Korean commanders are seemingly deploying these troops into high-risk operations with little regard for their safety.

These claims corroborate previous reports from South Korea, Ukraine, and the U.S. which suggest that Pyongyang has deployed thousands of soldiers to assist Russia in its military efforts, specifically around the Kursk border region. According to Ukrainian intelligence, the North Korean troops also face logistical problems, including a lack of drinking water.

In response to the continuing conflict, the U.S. is expected to unveil a $1 billion military aid package for Ukraine. This substantial assistance, slated for announcement on Monday, will include significant munitions, notably for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and the HAWK air defense system, as well as Stinger missiles and various artillery rounds. The Biden administration is attempting to provide Kyiv with maximum support before a change in U.S. leadership.

Beyond the immediate aid package, the war has taken a heavy toll on Ukraine, resulting in thousands of civilian casualties and causing significant economic strain. As of late August, the UN documented more than 11,000 civilian deaths, and Ukrainian prosecutors have reported hundreds of children killed. The nation is facing serious manpower shortages as it fights to reclaim territory, as well.
