Linebacker Shaquil Barrett is set to rejoin the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, just months after his surprising retirement from the NFL. The veteran player, who had previously spent five seasons with the team, is expected to sign with the Buccaneers' active roster after a short stint with the Miami Dolphins.
Barrett's initial departure from Tampa Bay came last February after he was released by the team, leading to a one-year, $9 million contract with Miami. However, he announced his retirement prior to the start of training camp, citing a desire to focus on family after nine seasons in the NFL. Subsequently, the Dolphins placed him on their reserve/retired list.
Following his retirement, the Dolphins waived Barrett on Thursday, and he cleared waivers the following day, making him a free agent. This cleared the way for his potential return to Tampa Bay, where he had previously earned two Pro Bowl selections and a Second-team All-Pro designation.
During his five seasons with the Buccaneers, Barrett demonstrated notable success, including leading the league with 19.5 sacks in 2019. Moreover, he was a key part of two Super Bowl-winning teams, first with the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 and later with the Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV.
Barrett had hinted at a possible return, noting a "perfect scenario" that would bring him back to Tampa, a team he said holds "a special place in my heart." The Buccaneers' general manager, Jason Licht, had previously expressed the possibility of a future reunion.
The Buccaneers, currently tied atop the NFC South with the Atlanta Falcons, face the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints in their final two regular-season games. Tampa Bay must win out, while hoping the Falcons lose one of their last two games, to secure a playoff berth.
