South Korea's anti-corruption agency has requested police intervention to detain impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. Following a protracted standoff with presidential security last week, investigators were unable to apprehend the president.
The agency and police confirmed discussions on Monday, just hours before the one-week detention warrant expired. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials is expected to seek a new court warrant to extend the detention period.
A Seoul court issued a detention warrant for Yoon on December 31st, after he repeatedly refused to cooperate with investigators.
The anti-corruption agency, leading a joint probe with police and military investigators, is considering charges of rebellion against the president. These charges stem from his actions on December 3rd, when, according to reports, frustrated by legislative roadblocks, he declared martial law and deployed troops around the National Assembly.
