Major US tech companies Meta and Amazon are reversing their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, a move potentially influenced by the upcoming return of former President Donald Trump. Both companies are reportedly scaling back or eliminating DEI programs, part of a broader trend affecting numerous US corporations.
Meta, in particular, plans to dismantle its DEI initiatives across training, hiring, and supplier selection. Internal documents reportedly cited "changing" legal and policy landscapes, referencing recent Supreme Court decisions perceived to have altered the court's approach to DEI. The company's vice president of human resources reportedly noted the term "DEI" is increasingly contentious, implying concerns about the perception of preferential treatment.
This shift at Meta mirrors a broader trend of rightward movement. The company recently announced the cessation of fact-checking on its platforms and the addition of Dana White, a UFC CEO and Trump ally, to its board. These actions are interpreted as potential efforts to court favor with the incoming administration.
Amazon is also reportedly winding down outdated DEI programs and materials, a statement that also aligned with the stated focus on inclusive policies and program efficiency, rather than the focus on groups.
The strategic retreats from DEI policies come as companies navigate a politically charged landscape, possibly responding to growing conservative pressure and boycott threats. This includes a number of other major corporations, such as McDonald's, Walmart, John Deere, and Harley-Davidson, which have recently adjusted or reduced their diversity efforts.
These actions by Meta and Amazon are noteworthy, particularly considering the complicated history between Trump and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook was instrumental in Trump's 2016 campaign and later reinstated his accounts. However, the relationship deteriorated amid controversies like the January 6th Capitol insurrection. Trump has repeatedly criticized Zuckerberg and Meta in the past, even threatening to imprison him in his book.
