President-elect Trump has pledged to release a report on the recent surge in unexplained drone sightings within a day of assuming office. This comes amidst growing concerns from Republican governors about the lack of information from the federal government.
Trump made this announcement Thursday evening at his Mar-a-Lago resort, addressing Republican governors. He criticized the current administration for not fully disclosing details surrounding the drone sightings, calling the situation "ridiculous."
Several governors echoed Trump's concerns. Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) noted the frequency of drone incursions over secure airspace near major military installations, particularly the large naval base in Quantico. He expressed frustration at the lack of explanation from federal authorities.
Further adding to the controversy, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry (R) pointed to drone activity over nuclear reactors, raising concerns about potential espionage and terrorism risks. Similar concerns were expressed by Governor Mark Gordon (R-WY).
While the White House and Defense Department officials have downplayed any threat, suggesting the sightings are likely a combination of legitimate drones, other aircraft, or celestial objects, Trump has vehemently disagreed. He has publicly called for the drones to be shot down and criticized the current administration for "keeping the public in suspense."
His comments follow reports of numerous drone sightings in New York and New Jersey over the past year. Experts, however, caution against shooting down the aircraft, citing potential safety risks.
