Heavy snow and icy rain across the UK over the weekend, followed by continued warnings, have caused significant travel chaos on Monday, January 6th, 2025. Multiple flight delays, train cancellations, and road closures are impacting travel plans nationwide.
The Met Office has issued numerous yellow weather warnings for snow and ice, affecting most of the country. These warnings, some lasting into tomorrow and Wednesday, are prompting concerns about further disruption. Concurrently, the Environment Agency has issued 171 flood warnings and 315 alerts across England, with two flood warnings and 34 alerts issued by National Resources Wales.
This fresh wave of weather-related disruption follows weekend incidents where runways were closed, rail services canceled, and collisions blocked roads, particularly in northern England. Significant travel disruption is anticipated.
Road conditions are deteriorating, with flooded roads hindering travel in key areas. Train services on major lines like the Midland Main Line are affected by flooding, causing delays and cancellations. Numerous routes across the East Midlands and the South West are impacted.
Flights are also experiencing considerable delays, with some experiencing significant delays of 28 hours or more. Airports are reportedly taking proactive measures, including having "polar bear" teams (winter volunteers) and significant grit and de-icing supplies on standby. Provisions for stranded passengers, such as sleeping accommodations, food, and water, are in place.
The continued severe weather is impacting various sectors, not only transport but also potentially water and power supplies in some regions.
