The White House has accused Russia of deploying North Korean soldiers in a manner that disregards their safety, characterizing their missions as "hopeless assaults" against Ukrainian defenses. National Security communications advisor John Kirby stated that these troops are being treated as expendable by both Russian and North Korean military leaders.

Kirby emphasized that North Korean soldiers appear to be highly indoctrinated, leading them to continue attacks even when their futility is evident. This has resulted in significant casualties and mission failures, according to the White House. He further noted reports of North Korean soldiers choosing suicide rather than surrender, likely due to fear of repercussions for their families back home if captured.

These claims emerged as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the capture of several North Korean soldiers who were severely wounded and subsequently died. Zelensky condemned the situation, stating, "The Korean nation should not lose its people in the battles in Europe," he also urged China to pressure North Korea to halt its involvement in the conflict.

Adding to the concerns, Kirby highlighted that the casualty figures for North Korean forces have been substantial, estimating that over 1,000 have been killed or wounded within the past week alone. The administration's comments underscore growing international scrutiny of Russia's tactics and the involvement of foreign combatants in the ongoing conflict.
