Washington, D.C. – A man was arrested Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center for attempting to bring a machete and knives onto the premises. Officers discovered the weapons during security screening.

Security personnel detected the machete concealed within the man's bag as it passed through the X-ray machine. Subsequent inspection uncovered three additional knives.

The individual, whose name has not yet been released, was taken into custody on charges related to carrying a dangerous weapon. Following the arrest, security screening procedures were briefly suspended on the north side of the visitor center before resuming normal operations.

The incident occurred as the public flocked to the Capitol to pay respects to President Jimmy Carter, who is lying in state. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to visit the Capitol later today to honor Carter before meeting with Senate Republicans.
