The New Year has been ushered in with global celebrations, notably including a vibrant fireworks display in London, despite severe weather conditions that prompted cancellations of numerous events across the United Kingdom. However, as the new year commences, the UK is grappling with multiple weather warnings and travel disruptions.
The UK is facing a tumultuous start to 2025 with four weather warnings issued for New Year’s Day. An amber warning for potential life-threatening flooding is in effect for parts of North-West England. Additionally, a yellow rain warning covers Wales, while a yellow wind warning blankets Wales and southern England. Northern Scotland is under a snow and ice advisory, leading to expected travel disruptions.
Furthermore, numerous flood warnings have been activated throughout the UK. 178 warnings in total. These warnings are in place across England, Scotland, and Wales. Despite the inclement weather, London’s New Year’s fireworks display drew crowds to Big Ben, providing a spectacle amidst the adverse conditions.
Travel disruptions have also impacted air travel. Several long-haul flights to London Heathrow experienced delays and diversions. A Virgin Atlantic flight from Los Angeles was diverted to Chicago due to a medical emergency, while a British Airways flight from Chicago was delayed due to technical issues. Additionally, numerous flights to and from Heathrow were cancelled due to weather-related air traffic control restrictions.
Rail passengers also face significant disruptions. TransPennine Express is urging customers to avoid travel due to severe flooding. Northern services are also experiencing cancellations and revisions due to flooding between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly.
Meanwhile, the Met Office forecasts continued unsettled weather conditions. Heavy rain is expected across parts of the UK. Also, there is the possibility of snow and ice in northern Scotland, and gusty winds are predicted for much of England and Wales. These conditions will likely persist, resulting in continued disruptions to travel and daily life.
