A former Green Beret has been identified as the individual behind the New Year's Day explosion involving a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. Family members expressed shock and disbelief at the news, describing him as a dedicated patriot and skilled soldier. The incident occurred hours after a separate vehicle attack in New Orleans, prompting investigations into a possible connection between the two events.
Matthew Livelsberger, 37, was described by his uncle, Dean Livelsberger, as a "Rambo-type" individual with a strong love for his country and military service. He served 19 years in the U.S. Army, 18 within the elite Special Forces, and had a history of posting patriotic content on social media. His uncle noted that Livelsberger was a staunch supporter of former President Trump.
The device used in the explosion, constructed with propane tanks, fireworks and camping fuel, has raised questions among those who knew Livelsberger. His uncle highlighted his nephew’s extensive training in the military, suggesting that the device's amateurish construction is inconsistent with his skillset. He also expressed relief that the blast caused only minor injuries.
Law enforcement sources reported that Livelsberger was stationed in Germany and on leave in Colorado Springs when he rented the Cybertruck. The vehicle was rented from the same carshare service that was used by the suspect in the New Orleans vehicle ramming, Shamsud-Din Jabbar. Both individuals were U.S. Army veterans with service in Afghanistan around the same time; however, investigators have found no direct connections so far.
Livelsberger's personal life involved a recent engagement. His uncle noted that a number of photos from social media related to this milestone have recently been deleted. Despite some family estrangement, he stressed that Livelsberger had a close relationship with his extended family. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities try to determine the circumstances leading to the explosion.
