San Francisco-based chef Geoffrey Lee has stepped down from his leadership roles at three Michelin-starred restaurants—Ju-Ni, Handroll Project, and the recently opened Hamburger Project—following a public social media clash with food influencer Kathleen Ensign. The incident, escalating from a lukewarm review to personal attacks, prompted Lee's resignation on January 3, 2025.
The controversy began in December when Ensign, sharing her 7.2 out of 10 rating of Hamburger Project on Instagram and TikTok, sparked a heated exchange with Lee. Ensign claims Lee responded with personal attacks, including comments about her weight, appearance, and even a voice message from his child. Screenshots shared by Ensign showcase Lee's critical remarks, labeling her as "weird," "unstable," and having an "annoying Karen voice."
Lee, in a statement to The San Francisco Standard, defended his initial response, emphasizing that he felt Ensign's initial review was disrespectful. However, he acknowledged his inappropriate escalation of the debate. He further indicated his belief that influencers should be subject to the same level of critical feedback as any diner.
Ensign's initial critique, including labeling the burgers "Ozempic burgers" as clickbait, was amplified through a viral TikTok video and further comments by fellow influencer Maggie Z, leading to an even wider public debate. The ensuing negative publicity and online backlash against Lee's restaurants ultimately contributed to his resignation.
Lee expressed remorse for his actions in a statement to Eater SF, noting that his responses were personal and did not reflect the work ethic of his staff. He sought therapy to better understand the situation. He emphasized that his staff should not be penalized for his behavior.
