Powerful winds fueled devastating wildfires across Southern California, prompting evacuations and causing widespread destruction. The rapidly escalating blazes, particularly the Pacific Palisades fire, threatened numerous homes and endangered residents.
Initial reports Tuesday indicated the Pacific Palisades fire had grown from 300 to nearly 3,000 acres. Fanned by record-breaking winds exceeding 100 miles per hour – the strongest in Southern California in a decade – the fire continued to expand, demanding immediate action.
A mandatory evacuation order was issued for the area between Piedra Morada Drive and Pacific Coast Highway. Cal Fire issued a red flag warning, citing extreme wildfire risk due to low humidity, critically dry vegetation, and the powerful Santa Ana winds. Firefighting resources from Los Angeles city and county were mobilized.
The evacuation of Pacific Palisades, a neighborhood home to nearly 24,000 residents, including many celebrities, resulted in a significant traffic jam on Sunset Boulevard. Some residents abandoned their vehicles, fleeing on foot. To manage the situation, the Los Angeles Fire Department planned to utilize a bulldozer to clear roadways of abandoned cars.
Governor Gavin Newsom expressed the severity of the situation, highlighting extensive property damage. "The situation is far from over," he stated, emphasizing the destruction witnessed. Meanwhile, the Eaton Canyon fire in the San Gabriel Mountains also intensified, reaching 400 acres. The extreme conditions, including grounded firefighting aircraft, further complicated efforts to contain the flames.
City officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, declared a state of emergency to support firefighting and rescue efforts. The National Weather Service issued a warning for dangerous wind conditions lasting through Wednesday. Residents in affected areas reported the rapid spread of the flames, necessitating quick evacuations.
