A California high school teacher, six months pregnant, tragically died after a fall in Greece during a hike near the Preveli Monastery on Crete. Clara Thomann, 33, reportedly slipped and fell approximately 164 feet down a gorge on December 23rd.
Emergency responders were immediately dispatched, and after a challenging rescue, Thomann received initial medical attention. She was transported to Rethymno Hospital, then subsequently transferred to the intensive care unit of Chania General Hospital.
Despite valiant efforts, Thomann succumbed to her injuries on December 29th, suffering multiple skull, chest, and leg fractures. Tragically, her unborn child, named Theodoro by her partner, also perished in the accident, the family confirmed.

Following the tragedy, Thomann's family traveled to Greece to be with her and to celebrate her life. Expressions of love, support, and memories of her joyful spirit filled social media posts and personal tributes, highlighting her impact on others, particularly her students.
Her remains were cremated on January 3rd, with plans for her ashes to be scattered in Greece and Turkey, mirroring the places she and her partner had hoped to visit together.
