President-elect Donald Trump has thrown his support behind House Speaker Mike Johnson, issuing a "Complete & Total Endorsement" on social media. This move comes as Johnson faces potential challenges to his speakership within the Republican party. Trump's backing arrives ahead of a crucial House vote scheduled for Friday, where Johnson's position is at stake.
Trump, in his statement on Truth Social, lauded Johnson as a "good, hard working, religious man" who will "do the right thing." He urged Republicans to unite, warning against jeopardizing their current political advantage as they prepare for the new term in 2025.
Johnson responded by pledging to "quickly deliver" on the incoming president's agenda, underscoring his commitment to working in tandem with the Trump administration. The speaker election precedes the formal certification of Trump's 2024 election victory, also scheduled for early January.
However, Johnson's path to re-election is not without hurdles. Some Republican members have voiced concerns, primarily related to a bipartisan end-of-year spending deal which sparked disagreement among conservatives. This division highlights the fragility of the Republican's slim majority in the House, where they can afford only minimal defections in the upcoming speaker vote.
Representative Thomas Massie publicly stated his opposition to Johnson, citing concerns about the legislative branch's strength and its capacity to fulfill the voters’ mandate. Additionally, the bipartisan spending deal that was opposed by Trump, exacerbated tensions within the party and resulted in some backlash against Johnson.
Despite the internal strife, support for Johnson has also emerged from certain quarters. Representative Mike Lawler, for example, argued that Johnson inherited the current challenging circumstances, blaming the removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy for creating instability. Lawler insisted that ousting Johnson would be equally as detrimental and likely not lead to a more conservative speaker.
While Trump had previously expressed support for Johnson, his backing appeared to waver temporarily following criticism of the bipartisan funding agreement. Trump's explicit endorsement is expected to reduce the speculation around potential alternatives to Johnson and is expected to rally republican support. Adding further momentum, Elon Musk also offered Johnson his “full support” following the endorsement from Trump.
