Heavy rain and frigid temperatures are causing widespread disruption across parts of the UK. Rescue efforts are underway as floodwaters inundate homes and roadways.
Monday saw numerous evacuations from flooded homes and stranded vehicles. Hundreds of schools were forced to close for the first day of the new academic year, and transportation was significantly impacted. Train services were halted, and commuters faced delays and closures on major highways due to high water and hazardous driving conditions.
Flood warnings were issued for over 165 locations in England and Wales. Falling trees and floodwaters resulted in train line disruptions and delays. Areas in the English Midlands, notably Leicestershire and Lincolnshire, declared major incidents as rivers overflowed, transforming roads into waterways and submerging vehicles. Rescue services reported at least 17 successful evacuations. Emergency responders worked to safely remove children from a stranded school.
The impact of the flooding is evident across the region. Farmland is heavily submerged, and trailer parks such as Little Venice in Kent are likewise affected.
While snowfall provided a picturesque backdrop in northern England and parts of Scotland, it also led to widespread school closures. Freezing temperatures are anticipated, raising concerns about icy conditions.
Authorities are urging caution due to the ongoing threat of snow and ice. Warnings remain in effect for much of the UK, extending into the coming days, especially in southern England.
