Federal authorities have arrested a Virginia man after discovering a significant stockpile of over 150 homemade explosive devices, some marked "lethal," at his residence. This marks the largest seizure of finished explosive devices in FBI history.
Brad Spafford was taken into custody on December 17th at his Smithfield farm, approximately 29 miles northwest of Norfolk. He faces charges related to the unlawful possession of an unregistered short-barrel rifle. During a search of his property, FBI agents located the rifle in conjunction with the extensive collection of improvised explosive devices, categorized as pipe bombs.
Many of the explosives were discovered in a detached garage, where agents also found tools and materials used in their production, including homemade fuses and PVC pipe. A number of additional apparent pipe bombs were found unsecured in a backpack inside the home's bedroom. Prosecutors noted that the phrase "#nolivesmatter" was written on the outside of the backpack, a slogan linked to an extremist ideology known for promoting violence and self-harm.
Furthermore, authorities state that Spafford resided at the residence with two young children. He reportedly informed investigators about a jar of highly volatile explosive material stored in his freezer alongside food items. The instability of the substance carries a risk of detonation from friction or temperature fluctuations.
According to court filings, Spafford allegedly utilized images of the President for target practice, expressed support for political assassinations, and had recently pursued sniper-rifle qualifications. Prosecutors have argued that his release poses a grave danger to his family, the community, and law enforcement officials.
The investigation was initiated following a tip that Spafford had sustained an injury while working with homemade explosives and had been stockpiling weapons and ammunition. It is also alleged he claimed to manufacture approximately 50 rounds of ammunition per day. An attorney for Spafford has not yet responded to requests for comment.
