A former nurse at Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Virginia has been arrested and charged with malicious wounding and child abuse in connection with the suspected abuse of premature infants. Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, 26, faces charges stemming from a year-long investigation into possible abuse of multiple babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The investigation, initiated by a concerned parent, uncovered evidence suggesting at least seven infants suffered unexplained fractures. Henrico County Police are now re-examining cases from 2023 and 2024 to determine if additional incidents occurred.
This shocking development has prompted deep concern regarding the safety of vulnerable infants in the NICU. Fathers of affected infants, such as Dominique Hackey, shared their distress with The Washington Post, detailing the trauma of watching their children endure injuries with unclear causes. One father reported his child experiencing 12 fractures.
Strotman, who became a registered nurse in 2019, was arrested on Friday. Police have not publicly disclosed the exact number of infants involved in the investigation, citing the ongoing nature of the probe. Strotman remains in custody without bond, and her next court appearance is scheduled for March 24th.
Hospital officials expressed shock and sadness at the unfolding situation and emphasized their commitment to patient care and employee support. The investigation remains active, and police are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
