The National Weather Service (NWS) in Boston has issued a winter weather advisory for several areas in Massachusetts, citing concerns over potential ice accumulation. The advisory, effective through Saturday morning, urges caution for travelers across western, central, and northeastern parts of the state.

The advisory is prompted by forecasts of freezing rain and cold temperatures, which are expected to result in light ice accumulations. While the anticipated ice accumulation is minimal, projected to be no more than a tenth of an inch, forecasters are concerned about the impact on travel, particularly given increased post-holiday traffic.

The NWS clarifies that winter weather advisories are issued for localized precipitation events that are potentially hazardous but are not predicted to accumulate significantly. This contrasts with winter storm watches and warnings, which indicate a higher likelihood of substantial snow, sleet, or ice accumulation.

The advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, encompassing numerous cities and towns across the state. Affected areas include Amherst, Ayer, Barre, Blandford, Charlemont, Chesterfield, Fitchburg, Framingham, Greenfield, Lawrence, Lowell, Milford, Northampton, Orange, Putnam, Springfield, Vernon and Worcester. Residents in these areas are advised to exercise caution due to the potential for slippery road conditions.
