N'DJAMENA, Chad – An attack on Chad's presidential palace resulted in the deaths of 18 assailants and the detention of six others, according to state media. One soldier was killed and three were wounded. The attack occurred Wednesday night, while President Mahamat Deby Itno was present, but authorities swiftly contained the situation.
Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah, in a televised Facebook address from inside the palace, declared the situation "completely under control." The broadcast, filmed late Wednesday, showed a seemingly calm scene amid soldiers.
The attack coincided with a visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who commended Deby Itno for restoring constitutional order. This visit underscores international recognition despite the attack.
The incident follows recent parliamentary elections, boycotted by the main opposition party. Election results are pending, and analysts anticipate the vote will further strengthen Deby Itno's grip on power.
Deby Itno assumed power following his father's death in 2021. The elder Deby had ruled the country for three decades. Deby Itno's subsequent presidential election last year drew criticism from international observers due to concerns regarding its credibility.
